Why no separate vehicle tax class for Euro 6 compliant light goods vehicles?
Hi there,
I just wondered if anyone knew why there is no separate, cheaper, vehicle tax class for Euro 6 compliant light goods vehicles?
I have a Ford Transit Connect 20 plate that I'm charged a flat rate of £290 a year for (standard for a vehicle of its weight and engine size registered on or after March 1st 2001).
I can see from the most recent tax rates that Euro 4 and 5 vehicles (which emit more CO2 than my vehicle) are only charged £140 a year. I thought as a nation we were trying to incentivise people to use lower polluting vehicles, so why are we charging more in vehicle tax for Euro 6 compliant vehicles than Euro 4 and 5?
Any thoughts/info appreciated,
Thanks

Because manufacturers were getting better at reaching previously thought to be un-attainable figures for CO2, and the treasury were starting to notice the loss, so they moved the goalposts, making a flat rate for all, and loading the CO2 levy onto an additional tax at registration.

To allow you to save for a new particulate filter.
