Why no separate vehicle tax class for Euro 6 compliant light goods vehicles?

Hi there,

I just wondered if anyone knew why there is no separate, cheaper, vehicle tax class for Euro 6 compliant light goods vehicles?

I have a Ford Transit Connect 20 plate that I'm charged a flat rate of £290 a year for (standard for a vehicle of its weight and engine size registered on or after March 1st 2001).

I can see from the most recent tax rates that Euro 4 and 5 vehicles (which emit more CO2 than my vehicle) are only charged £140 a year. I thought as a nation we were trying to incentivise people to use lower polluting vehicles, so why are we charging more in vehicle tax for Euro 6 compliant vehicles than Euro 4 and 5?

Any thoughts/info appreciated,

Thanks

Your EURO 6 vehicle will save a fortune in ULEZ charges compared to the older vehicles, assuming it is diesel.

Because manufacturers were getting better at reaching previously thought to be un-attainable figures for CO2, and the treasury were starting to notice the loss, so they moved the goalposts, making a flat rate for all, and loading the CO2 levy onto an additional tax at registration.

Would you say this is why there's no cheaper charge for Euro 6? Still, seems ridiculous that it isn't at the very least the same charge as for Euro 4 and 5

To allow you to save for a new particulate filter.

And a EGR valve, DMF and clutch, 4 injectors at £500 each and a VGT (turbo) choked by the EGR with oily soot

    (done these, had the bill)

Hand up who thought a diesel would be cheap to run but never saw the 70MPG promised?

I reckon so, they don't need to encourage people to buy euro 6 as you can't buy anything else anyway.
The emissions based rates for cars were supposedly to encourage the sale of low CO2 vehicles over higher CO2 ones, then they realised they were losing revenue as you could actually buy zero tax mainstream vehicles.

My 2016 5008 diesel is £30, but on the 01/04/17 new car tax bands came in.
A right kick in the teeth.
