Carpet Fitter

The carpet fitter literally pulled my brand new kickbords off my kitchen cupboards but they now don't fit because of the depth  of the flooring. I've tried in vain to sand them down to fit. Surely I'm not responsible although Flooring company has said that I am?
Advice would be very grateful.

You had a carpet fitted in the kitchen? If not what type of flooring is it?

I wouldn't expect carpet fitters to be cutting down kickboards. You'd either need to do it yourself or get a handyman. Was it not discussed prior to fitting?

It's also generally a good idea to get the flooring fitted before the kickboards are fitted, or even before the cabinets are fitted.

I would have expected you to have had the room ready for a carpet fitter and taken the kickboards off yourself.

poor comms - they should have explained that this is your responsibility beforehand
  • I was never informed that they would take them off and the carpet shop manager said he had no idea why the filter removed them as they normally fit the flooring up to the kick boards.

I don’t think anyone can advise what is normal when it comes to fitting carpet in a kitchen.

Maybe he did it for a neater finish. What are the kickboards made of?

Much neater job to remove the kick boards to fit any flooring (hopefully not carpet). You would pay more for having them cut down just like you do with doors.

If you are taking any excess off the kick boards take it from the top keeping a straight edge against the flooring as you don't generally see the top edge.

Always best to remove the plinth’s and let the flooring go underneath the base units.
You will have to plane the down to fit. Might not be normal practice but it’s good practice to do it.

It's worrying that the manager of a carpet shop wouldn't understand why the plinth/kick board would be removed when fitting new flooring in a kitchen.  Extending the flooring under the cabinets will create a much neater finish.
