Billed for Wrong Meter - back billing/refunds question
Any suggestions here... Had a (not so) smart meter installed 5 years ago but I just found out that they never registered it to my account.
As such Ive been billed for years for usage that was not mine...
Should the energy company refund this to me under back billing rules?
Does it matter that I have changed supplier twice in this time and that one of the suppliers has since gone bust?
What is my next move?
TIA

OK. So how have you been billed? Have the various suppliers used estimates or the readings that you have provided?
The meter that was installed in 2018 would have been SMETS1 so it would probably have gone dumb when you switched suppliers. Did you provide meter readings on switch?
A failed supplier loses its Supply Licence on the day that the SoLR was appointed so it is no longer subject to Ofgem regulations. Any claim that you think that you have against the failed supplier would have to be taken up with the Administrator.
Backbilling usually applies to your present supplier. Whilst the charges may be written off, your payments are not. That said, I do not believe that you have a case against your present supplier as they took your meter over in good faith and had no role whatsoever in failing to update the database. Finally, how has this matter suddenly come to light.0
