Amazon asking to wait 60 days for a refund they received return 28 days ago. Is this legal?

Amazon asked for proof of return which i sent them. The tracking shows delivered and signed by amazon 28 days ago. They are expecting me to wait 60 day with the reasoning being it may be delayed in transit (its not tracking proves that), or they're not processing returns quick enough which tells me amazon are at fault for not employing enough staff (if they're struggling mid summer when everyone is holding the purse strings, what are they going to be like after xmas. 90 days? 120 days) People are struggling already

After some googling i found gov.uk/accepting-returns-and-giving-refunds which states refunds must be issued within 14 days or receiving the return. So here Amazon are breaking the law by over 4x the legal timescale.

My questions are
Where do i stand on this and how do i proceed?
Who can i complain to?
Does anyone have a legal template letter and amazons legal team email address?
Any other advice?
This is a lot of interest they're accumulating while holding everyone's money, am i entitled to being compensated(as financially seems the only way to get through to amazon)?

This was the email i got in reply.

"Hello,

Refunds may happen within 60 days at maximum.

We usually process refunds within 14 days from the time you return the item but if it did not happen and there was no update that means that we are investigating what really happens on the return.

There are considering factor on the delay such as huge volume of returns or item getting delay in transit.

We can only process refund manually only after 60 days.

We apologized for the delay but rest assured that you will be refunded given that you have return the item even if did not reach our returns center.

In most situations, Amazon processes returns within 14 days. In some situations, the processing time takes longer. In those situations where the return item isn't processed in 14 days, we want to investigate the return to determine why our Return Center hasn't received/processed the return. In many instances, this additional time allows our Return Center to find the item and process it.

If you don't hear from our Returns Center by September 13, 2022, please write back so we can find out what happened."

thanks in advance

Your remedy is a small claim, which would take even longer.

How much interest do you think you're losing out on?

Was this a Amazon or Marketplace purchase?
Was it returned using Amazon return label. Which usually causes a refund day after dropping off at post office.
    High value item?

  • Its not really the point, the point is the largest uk retailer is openly breaking the law at a time when many people are already struggling. If they had not sent faulty goods, i wouldn't have needed to return it and order elsewhere as they initially said 14 days and would have missed the birthday. Now they're saying 60 days. Theres people far worse of than me am sure in the same situation with amazon right now

Item was and Ipod 32gb. Not sure if £200 qualifies as high value to amazon. The return label issued was a "pay it yourself" return label and we will refund you the psotage fees. Sold and dispatched by amazon

    You missed a bit out.
    It's an important bit.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says

(15)A refund under this section must be given without undue delay, and in any event within 14 days beginning with the day on which the trader agrees that the consumer is entitled to a refund.

It adds in the complication of Apple - a company not renowned for it's adherence to it's legal obligations

As @Alderbank says it's best to be exactly clear on your rights before shouting

Do you have a link to the purchase.
As while supplied from Amazon, most are sold by 3rd party as renewed is all I can find.

Then why mention it? No point pursuing legal action to recover pennies in interest.
