Courtesy car and insurance

So a few months back my leased cars parts were stolen from my drive
my insurance said they can’t guarantee a courtesy car so I chose to go to toyota
they came to pick up the car and provide me with a courtesy car
less than a month later parts were stolen from the courtesy car
for some reason Toyota couldn’t put me on their insurance and took only my policy number for insurance.  They didn’t make me aware verbally I have to put the courtesy car on m6 insurance.
when trying to sort out the insurance for the courtesy car it ended up being uninsured at the time of the incident.
toyota then told me I would have to pay up an excess of £1500 as I automatically went into their insurance.
They have my car ready now and refuse to release it without payment of the money/
£1500 to me is a huge amount and I wasn’t verbally told to put it onto my insurance.
they gave me a document to sign on collection of the courtesy car which I didn’t read and stated I would have to insure the car.
what would be the next step?would I have to pay up?

It's not their responsibility to tell you to insure their car when it's in your hands - you're responsible to check that you're covered (and given they'd specifically told you that you weren't covered on theirs then you had to arrange something yourself)

Luckily it was only parts stolen rather than an accident/traffic offence which could have had a much greater cost.

I'm confused at your mention of 'excess' though - are they asking you to pay for the parts or are they saying you were legally covered under their insurance but with a huge excess that you could have avoided via your own insurer ?

    What were the parts stolen?
Does your own car insurance cover driving courtesy cars?

Normally, you would be able to pay an amount to minimise the excess payable.  This is what I have done in the past.  Sounds like someone is stealing cat converters

Worth a look at the policy booklet, but normally it has to be a courtesy car provided by the approved repairer for identical cover, which the main dealer won't be, and the general driving other vehicles extension wouldn't cover theft  or damage.

Given it's a Toyota I'll put money on Catalytic Converter - they've got away with one so come back for the replacement
  • So my bumper and headlights were stolen from my car and courtesy car they took the bonnet, headlights and they broke a window to take the radio.  I didn’t realise that when they take the policy number it’s only for their records.  I’ve had my license for just over a year now.  The car was uninsured at the time of the incident so they put it automatically onto their insurance.

Used to be in my day that if the courtesy car was supplied by your insurer they automatically transferred your insurance to the courtesy car.
If the car was supplied by a third party  as it seems yours was then either you or the supplier of the vehicle had to inform your insurer who would then transfer cover. I often did this when I ran a car hire operation.

You do realise that when you get your car back you are going to have to keep the bonnet & headlights in the house or exactly the same thing will happen again?

Don't bother with CCTV, unless you want to know who to Go Biblical on yourself, people round here have plenty of CCTV of thieves faces and all the Police do is tell them it is their own fault for having steal-able things.
