Cabot - Northern Ireland

Hi, my debt was sold onto Cabot in 2017. It is showing on my credit file. I have never engaged with them. I live in Northern Ireland. Does anyone know if 'statue barred' applies here in relation to this. I have read reviews about Cabot whereby people have paid them back but the default still showed on the credit file as not being paid. I owe them around 5k (the original debtors kept pilling on the interest even though i told them I was having difficulties - my original amount was approx £3k).
I would like to resolve this as I can't get loans etc but i am not keen to pay them pack £5k if they have a reputation of not updating the credit file. As it it is 5 years since they recorded the default will it be statue barred next year? Will it still show on my credit file?
Any information would be great

The limitation period is 6 years in the United Kingdom (5 years in Scotland).
Any and all accounts will be removed from your credit file on the 6th anniversary of the default date, regardless of what happens.
If your last payment or written acknowledgement was prior to the date of default, then depending on the type of debt this is, you may already have a statute barred defence.
As you haven`t told us what type of debt this was, then most credit card and loan debts use the date of default as the "cause of action" date following a Court of Appeal ruling which confirmed a debt becomes statute-barred six years after the default notice expires.
For other debt types, the cause of action date would be the earliest date court action could have been started, this can be harder to work out.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. the original debt was with a catalogue account. Would you know how i would go about finding out if this is statue barred? Im am wary of contacting Cabot directly as I understand any communication with them can re-activate the account if it is statue barred.0
