Truly awful

Our flight out was cancelled less than 7 hours before departure.

The next flight was set for 24 hours later and that was over 3 hours late too. Flight not TUI so no hot drinks or food and booked seats not applicable So lost in effect 2 days with almost no sleep.

When we came back the flight was around hour late leaving. On arrival waited on Manchester runway an hour for steps to be brought up which the pilot could see.

In the baggage area no announcement but noticed only TUI cases not appearing. The attendant said it was because TUI paid less hence why e.g. jet 2 were coming on to the conveyor belt since they had more staff. We could wait several hours with no guarantee of when they would be offloaded with no access to anywhere to eat or drink unless used vending machine or we could fill in a form and wait - we gather it could be 10 days and each bag may come separately.

No medication, razor, and essentials. Who will say in what condition they will be in given there will be thousands of cases. No rep in sight.

I assume TUI are handled by one of the handling companies that will be looking after many different airlines and flights whereas Jet2 have their own staff to handle baggage in Manchester

Unless these were cancelled/delayed because of extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control, then you're likely to be able to claim compensation for both flights:

I guess it's understandable to choose to leave without baggage if waiting was going to be unpleasant and without guarantees, but if it contained medication and essentials I think I'd have stuck around for quite a while.

As above you should be able to claim out of pocket expenses and potentially cancellation compensation of hundreds of pounds which may or may not help soften the blow.  You say 2 days with no sleep? Did TUI not offer accommodation for the 24 hour flight delay?  Or even just stay at home? (You say it was cancelled 7 hours before departure?)

Not having your suitcase on the inbound flight, whilst frustrating, is not half as bad as not getting it on the outbound.  At least you're home so essentials can be easily replaced.  For essential medications, carrying a few days supply in hand luggage is always the best idea.

How long did you actually wait for your luggage on the way back?

Who did the attendant that said you could have several hours wait for TUI bags work for?

Putting medication in hold luggage is a bad idea, even on the return trip.  It should always be kept in hand luggage.  You won't have any entitlement to compensation for the return flight as it was 3 less than 3 hours late landing.  Time waiting for a free gate or the steps doesn't count towards delay time.

Arrival time is measure when the doors open , if they were waiting for a gate or steps, would the doors be open ? I doubt it

my last flight landed 2 and half hours late but we had to wait for a gate , doors open 3 hours 8 minutes late, I got compensation

OP never put essentials in the hold

Also, vote with your feet and go with someone else. We came back from Sweden last week to Manchester, and our bags were on the conveyor before we got through passport control (SAS).
