Broken Electric Meter

Hi all,

I moved to E-on next in January 2022 after my existing provider ceased trading.

I have a smart meter which provided live readings to the supplier, so was surprised when I was asked for electric meter readings when moving over.  I provided these anyway.

Several weeks later I was again asked for the meter readings but was surprised to see the reading on the electric meter had not changed (gas was operating normally).  To this day it has still not increased.

I informed E-on of this in February 2022 and they said they would send an engineer out to have a look, but they were busy and there might be a delay.  I still have not heard back from them on this.

They also said that historic usage could not be calculated and they would base my usage on ‘expected average usage’.

I have continued to pay my monthly DD but have noticed on my bills that I wasn’t being charged at all for electricity, it was stating zero usage. On my latest bill any mention of electrical usage has now been removed, although it does still state that I am on a dual fuel tariff.

I am now in credit by over £1,300.00 but not sure what I am meant to do and don’t want a situation where my DD doesn’t increase when it should and I am left with a large backdated bill to pay.

    Contact EON  again
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

You need to contact E.ON Next again and remind them. The best way to position yourself is to use any bills you have from previous years as a basis of your own estimate of how much electricity you would have used this year. Then when E.ON provide their estimate you can provide evidence for your estimate (if lower) or accept theirs.

As it's only the electric meter then take last years bills between the last readings in Jan 2021 and August 2021. Add the kWh together and divide by the number of days between the readings. For example if it's 880 kWh over 220 days that's 4 kWh per day multiplied by the price per kWh. Whether you use the price with the VAT added is up to you.
EON will try for a larger price saying that average usage is  8 kWh per day when your usage might be less than 50% of their figures. If they estimate within 5% of your figure then I wouldn't complain.
Someone please tell me what money is
