Supporting my 'study' worktop thingy!

Hey guys, I have a bowling alley of a room on the side of my house (1.5m x 4m!) which is going to be part office and part music room.

The music part means a pair of decks, a mixer and a large amount of records, and some other gubbins.

I have a nice 3m beech worktop weighing a hefty 38kg, and I estimate the stuff I'll put on it would weigh about the same, probably a bit less.

Now, I need to think how best to support it and get the look I want.

The wall its going on is the original wall of the house, so solid. So, I was thinking I get some square section, 44mm perhaps, wood which I attach to the wall with 10mm Fischer Duopower raw plugs and screws of say 90mm (44+40)..

That deals with the back, then on to the front... Whether I have two or three legs is one thing, but mainly its what I use..

The height will be 900mm so the metal breakfast bar feet would be ideal, however, this shiny metal idea is not in keeping with the room - beech worktop, darker wood desk and a dark green flat matt wall.

I looked to wood solutions, but these ready made as legs were about 40 quid each!

I considered newel posts, as the curved vibe would work well, however, they were either too tall or short, plus I couldn't see how I'd cleanly attach them.

Lastly I considered square section 69mm timber. But, again, how to attach.

I'm keen to hear people's thoughts on ideas above and ones I may have not thought of. I'm in a ticking time clock to get the gear from my parents house, and the desk out of what will be our new baby's room!

Cheers in advance! Happy to supply pics if helpful!

    This is the area..

    This is the worktop...

This is the desk which will go under the worktop, which will have a u shape cut out to act as a monitor stand.

And this is the colour that wall will be, the dark brunswick green on the bottom

  • If the wall is solid and you are ok with a bit of diy you could make some gallows brackets out of some sturdy timber.

Interesting, I had to Google what they were but I just didnt know they were called that.

I wonder how strong they are compared to legs supported on the floor... Possibly also with a diagonal brace similar to the Gallows idea

You can buy various sizes of gallows brackets.

If using something like newel posts, I'd drill a hole in the worktop (not all the way through), and a matching hole in the top of the post. Then cut a short length of dowel to suit the depth of the holes. Glue the lot together, job done.

Close but no cigar. The expandable tressle would do the height but the width would be an issue with the speakers, sub, and vinyl I need to store under it

Oh and the expandable legs, they'd do the job but at full expansion it looks like the measurements would be on display etc so it may look a bit clumsy.. I wonder if I could wrap it in something decent.. I suspect it would probably look crappy!

Cheers, I hadn't thought of that. I was more thinking angle brackets but they'd look a bit naff

Well, built properly, you can swing a body of them! So they can certainly take the weight.
