Trimming Doors – More Questions!

Hi all,

We'll be trimming some internal doors to hang soon. Was just this second about to order some primer for the cut edges.

But, it just dawned on me. The edge that'll be cut, the bottom, will reveal the core of the door (we need to trim a fair amount). Since the core of the door will be revealed, is there any point in priming the bottom?! If moisture wants to get in, it's there for the taking.

An alternative. One user on MSE suggested trimming off the lipping of the door, taking off whatever is needed, then reattaching the lipping to the door again, so the core isn't revealed. This sounds great, but as the door has grain effects in it, will this not look a bit odd? Or, once painted, will it be unnoticeable?

These are the doors we're getting:

Thanks!

How much are you needing to take off ?
It may be possible to take an equal amount off the top and bottom without revealing the core.

We'll need to take a minimum of 20mm height off each door. These doors only allow for 10mm height trimming, so core will definitely be revealed!

Not sure what the worry is about damp getting in. On hollow door the edges give them stregnth. You may be able to trim more without exposing the inner but there will be a narrower strip in place. If the open end is a problem either refit the wood you've just cut off or add another piece between the outer layers.

This was a suggestion of another person here on MSE (mentioned in my original post).

But my concern is, given the doors have a grain effect… by sticking the end piece back on, the grain effect won’t line up…!

The doors you are buying are hollow core not solid so when you cut the bottom off you’ll probably have a void that needs an infill as it’s prone to damage it won’t be seen so you don’t have to worry about the grain.
Another important factor before you cut is to check the top of the door lining is level/square , you may have to trim the top of the door to suit lining.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'

Remove the outer panel pieces from the piece you cut off and glue it in the void.
