Gas increased 243%, how can this be correct?!

British Gas Standard Variable Previous DD £38.46 Finished the 6 months £102.69 in debit thus: DD should have been £55.58 (£38.46 + (£102.69/6)) New DD amount is £135.01 - a 243% increase from £55.58!! Last year we were on a fix for gas at 2.3p per kwh. Come October unless the govt steps in the unit rate will be 15p per kwh or more than 6 times as much. So our bill that was £80 per month could easily be £480 per month just for gas.
