Sports direct refund policy

So I was in sports direct yesterday buying my toddler a £3 pair of swim trunks.
I heard the 4 people in front of me in the line be told " we don't refund just exchange" statement made to everyone in the queue.
I dont want or need a refund but I was confused how they are able to do that ? I had some queries is it legal ? Is it correct ? Can they actually not give you your money back just as a store policy etc ?

Yes it’s legal if you are buying instore and the reason for the exchange is change of mind rather than faulty goods. If there is a fault with the items then your statutory rights still apply.
Although during covid when they wouldn’t allow you to try things on, I did find it particularly unreasonable.
One of the many reasons I don’t shop with Sports Direct. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.3 -
Just to clarify, if you buy instore then retailers don't need to give you a refund or an exchange, if you've just changed your mind (or bought the wrong size etc). Statutory rights to a refund/exchange only kick in if the item is faulty / wrongly-labelled etc.0

Assuming you are talking about purchases made instore (and those purchases are not faulty) then not only can they do it as store policy, but the law also says that they do not have to refund or exchange at all....I dont want or need a refund but I was confused how they are able to do that ? As others have said, you only have a legal right to a refund of non-faulty goods if the purchase was made at a "distance" (eg, internet or over the 'phone) and you tell the seller within 14 days of receipt of the goods that you are returning them for a refund.
Contrary to popular belief, shops do not have to give you a refund for items you bought instore and you decide after buying them that you don't like them1
