Taxed car twice by mistake - is there any way of claiming this back?
Hi all,
Just checking through bank statements and realised that when my husband transferred his car ownership to me about four months ago, he didn't stop paying tax but I started so we've paid about four extra months of tax we didn't need to. Is there any way of claiming this back from the DVLA?
Thanks in advance,
Helen

If you became the registered keeper (and got a new V5C in your name) your husband should have automatically received a refund of any unexpired tax, and the DVLA.should have stopped taking payments. It would also have been a good idea for your husband to cancel the direct debit.
You need to speak (or write) to the DVLA. And make sure the DD is cancelled!0 -
Thanks, we had thought it would be automatic but have seen that it's listed twice in our direct debits for some reason. DD now cancelled!0

Only the account holder can cancel a DD. All the recipient can do is stop drawing on it, which is not a cancellation. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

You can get your bank to refund it under the terms of Direct Debit Guarantee if you find it difficult to get hold of DVLA.0

Have the funds actually gone out twice during those 4 months? (Having 2x DDs active doesn't mean they've both been drawn from). I assume yes, but it's worth asking anyway.
If it is yes then use the DD guarantee.
Plus - I assume you've cancelled the correct DD? (Last thing you want is for the wrong DD to be cancelled so NO tax is being paid).Jenni x0
