More information needed. What tariff was he on, what is he being offered (unit cuts and standing charge, not £ per month), gas/electric /both, and how much energy does he use from his meter readings, not in pounds?  And is he in credit or debit with his payments at the moment.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

It may have been that he was underpaying and EON may be playing a bit of catchup up (was his last bill in credit/debit) coupled with a guess for the future. and coming to the end of a good fix

He is being offered a fixed tariff - the alternative is the SVT but it's a gamble as to where that might rise to whereas the fix offers security.

Whichever his bills are going to rocket

PS Electric or Gas  or both. What is hs actual consumption for the last 12 months
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Is your boyfriend’s account in credit - based on actual meter reading rather than an estimate?

I assume that he was on a fixed that started in August 2021. A few figures:  in August 2021, the Cap was set at £1138. In October 2021, the Cap increased to £1277 and to £1971 in April 2022. The Cap is forecast to increase to c.£3600 in October 2022 with a further increase in January 2023 to c.£4300.

The above might explain why your boyfriend is facing such a large increase - as are all of us.

He will though be repaid £600 by his supplier (Government support) starting in October.

Last year my accurate fix monthly DD was £82.  Currently on SVR it is £210 and expected to be somewhere around £370 in October so that fix amount looks pretty much in line with expectations.

Without knowing anything about the size of the property, how many people live there etc.... I would say yes that looks about right from £41 a month.

Mine would have gone up from £55 to £210 with the predicated October price rises. But I've been cutting back. So won't be nowhere neat that much.

In August last year I was paying £40pm to SSE for gas and £35.56pm to Symbio for electricity. Both accounts were closed with credit balances. Nowadays I am paying £230pm to E.ON Next to cover both. On a tariff fixed until 1 July 2023. Roughly triple. It's affecting everyone.

Unfortunately, given the rate at which prices are increasing, if he uses exactly the same amount under the new rates as he did on his precious fixed contract then he will likely be using about £152 per month.

We need more info to know more (tariff rate per kwh and annual usage) to be able to give a real opinion and advice but most of Eon next's fixes are pretty competitive, I know people with other suppliers who would walk over broken glass to get the fixed tariff I got with eon next recently. Overall the figures do look roughly right as a % rise and are on the low end for a 2 bedroom property.

Knowing the unit rates and usage is essential to see if it's actually a good deal.
