Baffled by car tax

I bought a second hand car yesterday. The log book has been sent off to be changed to my name. I tried to tax the car online with the number from the green slip but just.end up at a page that says "successful application already completed".
I phoned dvla and they said because the car was registered as Sorn in the past five days I can't tax it until another 5 days have elapsed or my new log book arrives.
I'm left with a car sitting on the driveway that I'm itching to drive and have no clue what is going on. I've never had a problem taxing a car in the past - has something changed in the last decade since I last owned a car??? 🤔

You should be able to tax it at a Post Office (one of the main ones that do vehicle tax) with the green slip and MOT certificate.Maybe it takes 5 days for the Post Office to tell them- there is clearly no data sharing as MOTs have been online for many years so you shouldn't need to show a paper copy.Keep the receipt in the car in case you get stopped before the Post Office pass the form to DVLA for the clerks to type into LEOI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

The dealer forgot to send the green slip and mot with the car so I'm waiting for those to come in the post before I can do it at the post office.0 -
Why was it SORN'd by the dealer 5 days ago?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

No idea. I asked him that and he said that standard practice and me taxing it would release it from the sorn.0

Is it something to do with it being an import and only just being registered with dvla?

You can still tax the vehicle during this time at a taxing Post Office with the V5C and valid MOT. I can confirm it would be 5 working days.DVLA on Twitter: "@jsmith6392 Hello, when you SORN a vehicle using ...https://twitter.com › dvlagovuk › sta2 -
