Fedex bill

I bought an item off Ebay.   It was faulty and I received a full refund from the seller.   I have now received a fedex bill for duty and tax.   Can I ignore it or will there be consequences?

You certainly shouldn't ignore it.  Unless the import duty and taxes were also refunded you are potentially still liable for them.
  • Presumably you purchased from outside the UK and returned the item to outside the UK?

If you check the website you bought from you will probably find that it tells you that the buyer (you) is responsible for paying any import duties and/or taxes that might be due* in the country where you live.

So you are almost certainly liable to reimburse FedEx for the sums they have already had to pay out to clear customs and to get the item to you, and you'll have to try to get some sort of refund out of HMRC.  How easy that will be to do if you have already returned the item, I don't know...

*I believe there is a minimum value below which duty and taxes are not payable.  Depends on what value your seller put on the customs declaration.  I'm sure other posters will be able to provide details

    Hello OP

    How much was the item?

If you view your purchase history does the order details show if eBay collected any VAT or taxes/duties in addition to the item value?

You say it was faulty, but did you actually return it for the refund or was the product just written off by the seller?

You need to pay FedEx, either directly, or the shipper needs to speak to them. The difficulty is if it wasn't physically returned then that's a problem - as look at it from the other side, if you imported it and called it faulty to avoid D&T....

Has the OP indicated that they didn't return the item?

(I assumed from their opening post that they had - but yes, I note that they didn't actually say they had... )
