Why is my conservatory stepped?

    If they are building 9 inch brickwork to hold the fill they will need decent foundations. You also have to be careful with a deep hard-core fill with regard to future settlement. On site anything over 600mm has a suspended floor.
    Raised patios do cost more because of this extra work, and also the steps down to the garden.
    Also depends on the access to the job.

    And therein lies the problem....in my eagerness to maximise my home's footprint my home is for all intents and purposes a terrace (the 1" gap between this and my neighbour's crumbling garage has little practical use) with no rear access. Getting a digger through my home is less than ideal!
