Willow - Fast growing, and they drop (little) branches all the time. Not one of my favorites.
Eucalyptus is also quick growing, has leaves all year round and many of them respond well to pollarding. Down side is they have a shallow root system and can be toppled in extreme winds if left to get big.

Ash is one of the best burning logs, I’ll bet it has to come down, will he take it away for you at no extra cost too?

I love  apple trees but not sure if I would fit one in the space and it will cost a fortune to get the stump and roots removed from the ash (if indeed it is an ash and if it is diseased)

This year many trees are dropping their leaves early to cope with the heat so look for other signs.

Things will change in the UK as average temperatures get higher. Far from an unshaded sunny South-West facing garden being the most desireable, shade will become the feature most looked for.

We have precious few ways of keeping our houses cool as it is. Direct sunshine and heat onto huge rear patio doors/windows is making a lot of houses very uncomfortable in our hot summers. In 30 years we may all have shutters but until then, nature's shutters (ie. trees like your magnificent specimen) will be very desireable. Don't chop it unless you really have to due to disease.

If it's Ash and has to go, don't let the surgeon take it away. Get them to cut it into rounds and you can sell them to log burner owners - Ash is the gold standard of firewood.

The tree is an ash tree.

it doesn’t overhang his property at all - he is not next door but one house down.

my tree is quite tall - but there are lots of trees at the bottom of the gardens along the street.  And some ever greens in other peoples gardens which are monsters.

I am not sure if he had approached the last owner - he seemed quite worked up, so maybe.

It did annoy me that he didn’t acknowledge he was asking me to spend a lot of money so he can sunbathe!  But I suppose from his perspective my tree is impacting his enjoyment of his garden.

Cancel tree surgeon and live with your garden for two or three years to see how it works for you before deciding to do anything.

Do some reading up on Ash dieback and your responsibilities, the Tree Council webpage has easy to read guidance.I am pretty sure the transport of ash is now controlled, so any tree surgeon should make you aware of how they intend to keep within rules.

Is neighbour type who casts a shadow wherever they move through neighbourhood?

Seems there's supposed to be significant sections affected not merely spots on a few leaves.

I'm hoping this is not what you've got on yours!

Is it possible to contact the woodland trust and as for their recommendation for somebody to check the tree out?  I would expect somebody recommended by them to give an honest assessment, not the one which makes them most money.

Our tree surgeon discussed  two ways of maintaining trees: a) leave them alone.... b) crown them and ruin their shape.

Unsurprisingly, he thinks that b) is ill-advised.

If you are happy with the tree then leave it. Your entitled neighbour needs to put-up or move.

Our tree surgeon comes every two years to our trees. He sounds ages crowning the ancient oak. He comes down, walks up the hill to see it from further away, up again SDW back down however many times he needs.

He will be 60 next year and starting worigwithhis father when he was18. He is as likely to harm a tree as I am to swim the Channel.
