As a VDD payer with Eon Next this is quite correct but you will need to phone them to set it up as there is no way to do this online. No difference, both get the direct debit discount.

Just to say I have managed to change. Thank you both for your advice.2

I just wanted to add some information for anyone that's planning on doing this.
I asked EON to switch my direct debit (which was around £280 per month) to a variable direct debit and without asking or informing me they switched my tariff from 'Next Flex' to 'Next Flex - Prepayment'.
It look like the prices have increased. This could be a result of the caps changing, but something to keep an eye on when switching to a variable DD.
ElectricUnit charge 32.35p/kWhStanding charge 54.73p/day
GasUnit charge 10.64p/kWhStanding charge 37.80p/day
ETA. I just looked at the updated rates for July onwards and it looks like the Prepayment DD rate actually works out cheaper than the standard DD rate. Bizarre.

This is obviously a mistake by Eon Next - as the rates you pay on VDD are the same as those on FDD.Del_III said:I just wanted to add some information for anyone that's planning on doing this.

You need to ring them back and get them to put you onto VDD and not the prepayment tariff option you have been put on - this is only for prepayment meters AFAIK.1
