My off peak usage is 48% of our total usage if I exclude our battery system (which not many people have) - that is just the EV, I don't delay running the washing machine, dishwasher etc.

When my wife changes to an EV as well next year, that will increase to about 65% of our total usage.

In reality with our battery system 99% of our total usage is charged at off peak. People need to start thinking about the whole energy set-up, not just the cost of EV charging in isolation - there are so many options available. When you will eventually be able to use your EV as battery storage to run the house, then off peak tariffs will be even more important.
Thanks, that's a perfect example of when a split tariff is advantageous. Petriix in your posts you do not explain the need to move much of your domestic electricity usage to middle of the night to make the split tarif financially adventageous. I have no beef with split tariffs, only with posts that are misleading because they omit vital information
If you count 9:30pm as the middle of the night. It's pretty easy to save the washing machine and dishwasher until then, and plenty of time to put the washing on to dry if required. It even covers some evening TV watching and occasional late night snacking.

However, a fix of 40p per kWh is incredible value right now, with the October price cap expected to be well above that. Even if you don't load shift at all it's exceptional value at this point.

I understand Octopus off peak tariff was 0030-0430 ?

Anyway I just checked and Octopus are not taking on new customers...Below is the message when you ask to join...so unless you already have a split tariff contract with them I guess it's 28p until the new higher price cap comes in

You need to know this 👇

Energy prices are at record highs, and most homes will be better off staying with their current energy supplier right now.

If your fixed term is coming to an end, don't choose a new tariff or switch supplier.

Instead, let your supplier automatically move you to their default tariff, so your prices are protected by the Government's Energy Price Cap.

Would you like an email when prices fall?

“Like a bunch of cod fishermen after all the cod’s been overfished, they don’t catch a lot of cod, but they keep on fishing in the same waters. That’s what’s happened to all these value investors. Maybe they should move to where the fish are.”   Charlie Munger, vice chairman, Berkshire Hathaway

9.30pm? But are not the Octopus Go cheap rate hours 00.30 to 4.30am?
Most modern w/m's and d/w's have timers, so perfectly possible to set these up to run on cheap rate, if the noise of the w/m doesn't keep you awake.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

That's been on Octopus's website for a long time, you have to phone them up to switch - then they talk through tariffs and usage to make sure you're not making an expensive mistake in switching rather than staying on price cap tariffs.

If you don't already have a smart meter, you then have to go on a higher default tariff until the meter is installed - that took about 4 weeks for me, others have managed to do it faster dependent on available engineer slots in their area.

Octopus Go Faster offers start times from 9:30pm and they are (and have never stopped) taking new customers. If you quoted the full message then you'd see the bit about what to do if you disagree.

It's almost as if people are clutching at straws to find reasons why EVs couldn't possibly be so cheap to run...
