Council tax for detached annexe - separate from main property?

Thank you both. Yes, it seems to be the case that the annexe may not have been listed for CT for the reasons mentioned Lincroft.If it's true, that the LL has avoided CT because they basically haven't followed any regulations, does anyone know how serious this is or what action the council will take? i.e. will the tenant be forced to move out? Regardless of how bad the property is, I think this would cause some stress and worry0

It's not the CT element or lack of pp that is the main worry, it is the lack of Building Regulations approval. Unless having more than one dwelling at a property contravenes council policy, the council is unlikely to order the occupations cease.
But if either annex constituted a danger or potential danger to health, the council could order occupation to cease, then either rectification, return to original usage or demolition. These are of course the worst case scenarios. I don't think anything could be more stressful or worrying than living in a property that could for example be a fire trap. On the other hand it could be fine, we just don't know.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1 -
Most likely the VOA/LA would take action to register the annexe, and the LA would eventually bill the tenant, who is liable as the occupier. They would then need to provide proof of their full time student status and the date of occupation.
As lincroft stated, the danger here is one of health and safety: An LL who does not register a property for CT is not likely to bother with gas and electrical safety certificates either, and the utility connections may have been bodged and unsafe.No free lunch, and no free laptop

So we had exactly this, however, it is my mother-in-law living in the annex. We had to register the annex as a separate address with the local authorities, and it is now in Band A. Any council tax for the annex should cover those who are permanent residents of the annex, meaning if it is a sole occupier they may be eligible for a reduced rate!no_moolah said:Hello all, looking for a bit of advice here please... does anyone know if a self-contained annexe should have its own Council Tax band? @lincroft1710 I agree with you entirely, if they are a student they will be disregarded for CT - that should not stop OP from getting the annex registered for CT though
