There is no such thing as a price cap, the government is lying to the people, the price of energy depends how much you use, never mind conserving energy to save the planet, the more you use the less you pay. Example myself and my 2 sons. We live within 5 miles of each other. . I live alone in a 2 bed flat, pay direct debit and have a smart meter, low user. My charges are for electric standing charge 50.53 gas 32.03. KWh electric 29.10 gas 7.65. My youngest son new semi, electrics standing charge 42.69 gas 25.92 electric kWh 26.31 gas 6.93. My eldest son old house no smart meter, high user, electric standing charge 21.8 gas 24.7, electric kWh 15.23 gas 2.65. A huge difference. I pay £301 standing charge per year my eldest son pays £170. Can you please tell me how is that fair ? It sort of proves to me,  families who live in a large property and don’t mind using more energy, pay less for it than me as a pensioner trying to keep costs low and out of the benefit system.  The argument we all get £400 benefits me more doesn’t stand up. Everyone pays the same price for petrol and diesel, food and drink. Why is it different with energy ?

  • @mikejxe your oldest son is obviously on an old fix as his charges are nowhere near the current cap unit rates and standing charges.

That is the only reason he is paying less, nothing to do with the size of his home.

He will get a big shock when his fix ends.

If you and your youngest son were on the same tariff with the same company, everything would be exactly the same, but that cannot be so.

It is the unit rates and standing charges that are capped, however there are also small variations by company and region.

Like many, you haven't got your head around the way it works yet.
