"End of service life" meter leads to a smart meter installation problem

We recently had a letter saying our electricity meter has reached its end of service life and we should book the installation of a smart meter, so I phoned to confirm that we don't mind a new smart electricity meter being installed, but we can't switch the gas meter as it's inaccessible (we purchased our bungalow 12 years ago, and the gas meter is in the back bottom of a cupboard in the corner of a fitted kitchen). After much to-ing and fro-ing where they keep saying they can't do just the electricity meter they have come back and asked us if we've ever had a letter about the gas meter being end of service, and I confirmed we haven't.
My concern is that they are now going to say the gas meter is also at end of life (which I guess is quite likely) and I'm extremely worried as to what happens if they do!!! Will we have to pay a) for a 'handyman' to disassemble/reassemble the kitchen and b) pay for the meter be moved so this doesn't happen again in 20 years time? Or is some of the onus on the supplier as they are the ones saying it has to be done? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
