My friend is with Octopus and a neighbour incorrectly entered my friend's address, so British Gas keep trying to take supply, a third attempt today as notified by Octopus, each time this entails a phone call to BG and explaining the situation, last time BG said it wouldn't happen again but it has!

Can a complaint be lodged with the ombudsman?

Lodge a written complaint with BG
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • No. This is what is known as an attempt at an erroneous transfer of supply: sadly, it happens all too frequently. If no transfer of supply has actually taken place then, apart from a bit of inconvenience, there is actually little to complain about.

The Energy Ombudsman can only deal with complaints that have followed, in full, the supplier's complaints process. As your friend isn't a BG customer, then BG may not entertain a complaint as technically it hasn't done anything wrong. It is only acting on the instructions that it has received. However, a complaint is worth a try. if you decide to raise a compliant against BG then do it in writing -  not over the phone. Provide BG with the MPAN for the supply that it is trying to takeover. Tell them that the remedy that you are seeking is a cancellation of the switch.
