LPG installation?

Is it a good idea to install LPG in the car? Why so few people use it since LPG is nearly twice cheaper than petrol?

LPG seems to have taken a trumble in recent years.

Not many manufacturers sold them coverted already. A few did but not many in the UK so it was nearly always something you did yourself later.
Often much later as conversions usually stuffed the manufacturers warranty.

This didn't give the petrol stations a lot of confidence when it came to supplying the stuff and they also needed to invest in the storage and filling systems of what they thought was a bit of a niche market that wasn't really being backed by the manufacturers/importers.

Add to that modern petrol and diesels becoming ever more efficient. Hybrids and electrics came along and the fuel costs until recently had been fairly reasonable and stable, LPG became a bit of a forgotten fuel.

I had read recently there's only around 350 or so LPG filling stations in the UK at the moment and they are falling rather than increasing.
Most motoring bodies think it could still be worthwhile if you have a fairly large older petrol car like an SUV though you'd need to keep it on the road a good few years to recoup what you spent on the conversion.

You'd probably be better off with something hybrid or electric buying new or newer.

Vauxhall did a Vectra dual fuel as standard.
I had one before the LPG tax hold went away, not sure what it was called.
It limited what could be charged per litre.
    Great car No issues.
Not sure on mpg as drove it like I stole it.
    Was a company car.
  • LPG will be phased out with the end of sales of petrol and diesel cars. The writing is on the wall, the future is electric. So there isn't much incentive to install more LPG pumps, and that inconvenience is enough to put most people off it seems.

There is also the cost of the conversion. While you save money in the long run, a fair proportion of UK households have very little in the way of savings to spend on things like that. It's the classic poverty trap - lack of funds prevents installing money saving upgrades.

When your doing single figure MPG's spending £1k or £2k on an LPG system paid for itself fairly quickly but when you can
just go and buy a diesel which will do 60mpg its probably not worth the hassle.

People forget the LPG system needs its own servicing. Often never serviced and the car sold long before the installation
costs have been recouped and sometimes sold with a misfire which maybe an expensive fix.

  • My wife is Polish & we visit regularly, LPG is very popular here, there are places that just sell LPG without selling petrol & diesel.
My in-laws have an LPG converted Zafira, I think the main reason LPG didn’t take off as much in the UK, is because it is fairly prosperous & many people change their cars often. It takes a few years to recoup the cost of the LPG installation, so unless you have a V8 Range Rover it will take years!
