BT number change

Ten days ago our telephone number stopped receiving calls. We had still been able to make calls. When our number was called it rang but there was no answer, nor did our messaging pick it up.
BT is unable to explain what is happening. I have just tried dialling out again to my mobile, and now get "engaged", which it is not!
We have BT fibre broadband with a digital phone line, upgraded from cable 2.5 years ago. Anyone know what is going on as BT obviously doesn't?
We have been told that a near neighbour on the same exchange has a similar problem.
Anyone out there hd recent experience of this. The only posts I could find were over 10 years old.

Report it as a fault with your phone provider.

The thread title "BT number change" seems spurious, what change?1

Update: No helpful replies yet. BT admits it has given my number to someone else in error, but says it can't correct its mistake. The new recipient of the number is not answering any calls, and our phone still makes calls identified with our number. All BT can offer is a new number, something that is unacceptable to us.
Any constructive suggestions. Please.

Sounds very unlikely, how could they give your number to someone else …even if your number was changed in error ( so your number was made spare ) numbers are not immediately reused as the recipient will no doubt get calls intended for the previous user of the number.
if you dial 17070 ( presumably this still works on DV , Digital Voice ) and the correct number is read out , and when you make a call ( to a mobile for example ) the correct number appears as the caller on the mobile…then whatever the issue is , it’s not your number has been ‘given’ to someone else…as a trial , if your phone is currently connected to the router ( because it’s DV ) have you still got the copper service master socket ?, try putting the phone in there and making a call to the landline from your mobile, just in case it ‘rings’0
