Faulty used car

I only needed it for 3 months, then I get a work car - thought it would last that long!0

Which puts a rather different perspective on it. Then I suggest you reject it within 30 days for a full refund, and make do for another 2 months.
Otherwise you could be arguing with the retailer for 2 months anyway.
If you do not reject in writing within 30 days then your rights under CRA2015 diminish greatly, and your refund will be discounted by the use you have had of it. Or he may insist on a repair, which, given his attitude so far, will likely be bodged.
For the next 10 days or so, you have a full get out of jail card, so I would use it while you can.No free lunch, and no free laptop1 -
Thank you - I have just spoken with Trading Standards who have confirmed they should refund, wish me luck!!!0

Also you mentioned in a previous post that the dealer claimed as the car was a trade-in, it wasn't their responsibility. There is a technical term for this, it begins with a B, ends with an S and has double L towards the middleIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1 -
Oh sorry, Chartered TS Institute? Apparently they assist with things like this0

Lol yes I thought that too!!!0

What does reduce the liabilities is reasonable expectations for the age, condition, mileage and price paid.
You don't seem to have mentioned what you paid, but 16 yo car with 140k miles is only ever one large bill from the scrappy.
If you paid, say £400, with the hope to get you through the 3 months until the company car arrives, then scrap it and get £250 back, then this is simply bad luck.
If you paid "top dollar" for the car, allowing for age, then you'd expect it to have seen you through the 3 months with a bit more certainty.
Have you established what is actually the fault / cost to repair? A clutch cable is much cheaper than a new clutch.0 -
Take the car back in the morning with a letter of rejection. Clock is ticking.
Leave it with them and give 7 days for refund.0 -
On a 56 plate polo I'm more amazed the head hasn't gone.
Get it gone. As @Grumpy_chap says at this age and mileage it's only ever going to be a world of trouble.1 -

Clutch cable for 2006 Polo £12. Very easy to fit.
If the old one lasted 140,000 miles that's not bad.
Not really worth going to court over, whatever Trading Standards think.0
