What's causing all these house explosions?

There was one yesterday or today in Croydon. I haven't got any statistics to hand, just going off what I've caught in the news, but I believe this is like the 4th I've read about this year.
I know it's gas explosions, but does anyone have any insight into what exactly is causing these? Tampering, unlucky random event that's bound to happen etc?
