I’m not convinced the technology is reliable generally and specifically in my case, it almost certainly won’t work as my meters are in a cellar with no Wi-Fi or mobile signal.  Smart meters in dumb mode are a pain to read.
Probably a common problem in some areas. Here is the info on how meters communicate with the smart meter comms network. It is area specific https://www.smartme.co.uk/smets-2.html#gsc.tab=0 and the cellar may not present a problem for you. The is also some info on options for boosting the signal.

I read something somewhere a whiile ago that smart meters run on the 2G network, and that 2G is due to be switched off at some point in the not too distant future. Don't know if that's the case or what effect it will have.

So in the end the answer to my dilemma was simple.  Smart meters are bigger than my existing meter and there isn’t enough room!
