FD only have 2 call centers. Both in the UK for now. But Mrs Sturgen wants to change that 🤣Hamiliton (Glasgow) & Leeds. Strange as it seems, people from oversea's do work in the UK. So you can get to speak to people from various countries.
Yep, I'm familiar with the concept of foreign nationals working outwith their country of origin. It was the repeated use of "checking account" that made me ponder that they may be also servicing American customers.

Your reply has prompted me to ask FD so I'll see what they say and report back.

Either way, it's their poor digital offering that has prompted my leaving rather than anything else.
Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right! :D

I too am bailing from First Direct after 14+ years.

They used to pride themselves on answering the phone quickly with UK based call centres. Last week, I had a 10 minute wait to speak with a seemingly American based agent who could not grasp the issue with my "checking account".  I've only phoned a handful of times in recent years, but find they've got exponentially poorer each time.

Their app and online banking functionality is very basic and has some frustrating limitations.

And don't ask to change the date of the Regular Saver attending order that's set to within three working of requesting to open the account. This is too much for their Edge system that was developed in the early 90s.

In a way I'm sad to leave, but the wait for them to innovate has proven too much for me.

Your right and wrong as such.
FD calls are in the uk, but the fraud call centre is not as is run by HSBC from India or South Africa from memory.
Who would believe it’s a real banks  fraud call from say an Indian call Centre.
The fraud call centre is the only letdown in my eyes.

Per their Twitter reply, their call centres are in Hamilton, Leeds and Salford. As part of the HSBC group they do occasionally use their overseas agents for calls. Mystery Solved.

Been online banking for as long as I can remember.  Things have changed with better security requirements but it’s so much easier than traveling 100 mile return trip to my bank.  I’m surprised so many posters are saying who they bank with on an open forum.
As RG2015 says, why? What would be the problem?
This part of the forum is about bank accounts - it's where people regularly discuss bank accounts.
It would be difficult to do that without mentioning the banks!
You're not a newcomer (your profile badge says you've been on the forum 10 years) so I'm surprised you're surprised!
It’s because I’m a long time user.  I’ve seen an  old poster who had continual posts  on ridiculous topics like what’s your favourite animal, school, colour and it became obvious they were phishing .  Also if a poster does release other info it may be possible to find where they live.  I see posters on here and I know they are active on other sights either by their similar user name or by topic in discussion.

I know I was the one that initially questioned your post, but you have just reminded me of an incident a few years back.

It happened on another financial forum and my user name was anonymous. However, I referenced a post I had made on Twitter and that had my actual name. A troll must have seen this and insulted me on the first forum using my actual name.

People really do need to take great care and in retrospect your post does raise a very valid issue.
  • Yes plus Yes
  • I have had an FD account for 30 years ....
    !!!

I never knew FD had been around that long! Only heard of them, and joined myself, in 2017ish, thinking they were a new bank

Though, at that time, I also did not know that they were part of the HSBC group. Obviously the wiser now.

I have seen posts and threads like this, across the social media spectrum, too and raised an eyebrow or two.

There was one where you select your birth day and month to reveal your Drag Name, or something similar. Then another, by the same poster, which had images and years, where you select you identify your Virtual Pet via your year of birth.

I know they do not have sufficient information to identify who I really am, however, I still do not take part in these quizzes.

I would never use a debit card for online banking.  Then again I would never use PayPal either.

I agree about debit card, but not PayPal.

It is so much easier these days to get a refund for things that didn't arrive, or for mis-described items, with PayPal than it is from a credit card provider.

I always assume that any serious MSE forum user would be quicker to say who they don't have a bank account with.
