I'm trying to get my head around reporting an item lost outwith the UK to a British police force.

    So am I

i can’t see the point in covering possessions anymore
Get a policy that covers accidental damage or loss if you want it covered.

I have!  I chose those options on my insurance
So what exactly does it say for accidental damage/loss? It can't expect you to report a non-crime to the police, or someone irrelavent like a hotel or tour operator if you weren't in a hotel or on a tour when it happened.

  • This was in the email I received asking for more information:

    "
    • A police report - This should show the details of the incident. If you do not have a police report, we need to see a loss report from your tour representative, hotel or similar. This is required as per your policy terms and conditions; unfortunately without this we will be unable to consider your claim."

And this is in the general T&C

      Lost, stolen
or damaged personal belongings (Baggage cover is optional)

      • Take all reasonable steps to recover your property.

      • You must report details of the incident to the police or any other relevant authority within 24 hours, and request a written incident report.

      • Do not dispose of your damaged items.

      • Contact the Travel Claims helpline.

      • Written confirmation of the loss or damage from the police or any other relevant authority.

      • Proof of purchase for the lost, stolen or damaged items.

  • Yes, I did read it, but I also figured if there was no relevant authority it would not matter - I spoke to them yesterday and they have made a note but were not hopeful of it being paid.

I'm wondering if they knock it back if the ombudsman might help as surely it is unreasonable if there is, as you say, no authority to report it to

There must be many cases of lost property when there is no 'authority' to report it to.

When something is lost there is not necessarily  an 'incident'. It could have been dropped without knowing when or where.  the loss only discovered when the item is needed again.

I lost a watch. I put it on in the morning but when I tried to look at it for the time in the evening I realised it was not there. I have no idea when or where, during the day,, I lost it.  Fortunately, it was not a valuable watch.
