Kitchen sink waste trap choices

If left empty for a while the kitchen sink waste starts to smell a bit in my late dad's house. It currently has a bottle trap that probably needs a good clean out so I'm going do that but I was thinking I might just replace it altogether. Should I just replace it with another bottle trap or stick a standard P trap in there instead?
My thinking is that the bottle trap has more potential to hold onto waste and therefore smell if not used for a while.

Is it possible that the water in the trap evaporates over time and the drains are then open to the room? Especially with the recent heat.
Bottle traps are easier to open and clean without spillage than S or P traps (imho). Changing trap style may need other pipework alterations to suit the change.
Bicarb and vinegar make a good drain cleanser I believe. Don't forget to clean the sink overflow pipe as well.1 -
It should be a pretty straight forward swap with either type of trap tbh.
Because of the way the sink is fitted the trap is installed directly below the 1/2 bowl, the main sink waste is on the other side of the cupboard partition and feeds into it from the right and above.

Started off with a P trap but it didn't fit, wasn't enough room with the waste pipe at the back. Ended up getting a replacement bottle trap instead.
What's the cap highlighted in these pics, it's seems to have a mesh covering rather than being solid?
