Are you really getting less than £146 per month Pension ? The standard UK pension - for those with sufficient NI contributions - is £185 per week

Why is it surprising? Having lived in South Africa for 50+ years it's unlikely that he'd have sufficient NI contributions for a full UK state pension, or anything remotely close to it.

  • As you have said   -   ' I was in business for 41 years'

I thought you would have understood the basic -  have to pay in to get something out, what did you expect to receive before you left your home in SA, did you make any enquiries?

Did you have a home in SA, has this been sold or are you able to rent it out?

I am sorry you find yourself in this situation but many who have paid into the UK system all their lives are struggling, maybe see if you have a foodbank in your area which might help a little.

If the OP had been sensible they would have paid voluntary NI while they were in SA. They don't mention anything about their SA benefits and have not seemed interested in any answers. I think it's a troll.

It's perfectly possible for an expat to pay "next to nowt" in NI and get full UK state pension. If they paid Class 2 voluntary NI a lifetime total contribution amount of about £5k will get them the full flat rate pension of around £180 per week or £9.3k annually.
Or anyone to earn between the low limit and the limit to pay actual NI is also very well known. Many directors tend to pay themselves that specific amount to acquire NIs without actually paying anything. And some people can get NIs by getting benefits, such as those claiming child benefits. So, it is free money.

There are too many ways to get credits very cheaply or for free; therefore, it should be closed so contributory benefit is properly contributory and available to anyone who paid the proper rate for them.

OP said he was getting £146 pension and £600 UC.
I get £690 SRP for 41 years NI.  And I have an occupational pension so now I get my SRP there is another £138 a month in income tax to pay.

The SA state pension (known as the 'older person's grant') is only payable to those actually living in SA - but any private pension should be portable in terms of drawing on it now OP is living in the UK.
