Debit card abroad - spending on it using Google Wallet (Google Pay)

I have one of the MSE suggested best debit cards to use for spending abroad.   When in Spain, does anyone have any recent experience if there will be an issue paying in bars and shops using Google Wallet on my mobile rather than the physical card (subject to spend limits of course).

I will take the physical card plus one other so its ultimately not an issue but ideally I wouldn't be carrying them with me out and about.

Ive recently got a brand new phone and, although possibly slightly behind the curve, I am now definitely a 'pay contactless by phone' person where possible.

A note for anyone searching this thread in the future - it was absolutely no issue paying by Google Wallet on my phone  in Spain - one bar and one restaurant were cash only (handwritten notes on the door as you went in) but apart from that, all good.

Wouldnt expect much trouble in Spain.

In Mexico awareness of contactless payments is very low even if their machine supports it. I had a few people look at me very confused when I tapped my phone and the payment went through. Most just accepted it because the machine said approved but a few did want to see the physical card.

Generally now anywhere that takes card payments will be ok with contactless because the machines are just set up that way now. 

The only issue I have had travelling with contactless has been in one or two ticket vending machines in stations where the machine didn't have a contactless reader presumably because they predated contactless as a thing.
