Yes - it needs to be the proper stuff.You can get DIY kits, depending on stair angle, I guess. But more involved in fitting.Mind you, they also have gaps around their edges which can be grabbed. They shouldn't actually break, but there will be some strain on the fixings.In your situation, I suspect Doozer's idea might be best - a flat surface doesn't have any grabbing points.1
