The National Grid doesn’t have any energy to sell: it just manages and runs the transmission grid. For this to work, National Grid would have to buy out all the existing suppliers and set up a customer-facing organisation for billing etc. Where would the 20% saving come from?
I guess what you are asking for is nationalisation of domestic energy supply. Again, unless the Government places Requisition Orders on all suppliers, the taxpayer (and ultimately consumers) would end up with a very large bill. For example, the French Government has just offered £8.2Bn for the final 15.9% share that it doesn’t own in EDF. We are talking serious money and years if this was to happen.0
