E.On Next - Fix or Variable?

Hi all,

I'd like some advice on renewing with E.On Next. I've read all the guidance and similar threads on here but still haven't come to a definitive answer. Is it worth fixing on the Next Online v17 tariff or going onto Next Flex and hoping the prices don't rise too much?

We're currently paying £94.00 a month direct debit for electricity and gas. Here's our current fixed tariff/usage, which expires on 13th September 2022:
  • Electricity usage 1,475kWh
  • Electricity unit rate 19.45p per kWh
  • Electricity standing charge 16.92p per day
  • Gas usage 12,691kWh
  • Gas unit rate 3.78p per kWh
  • Gas standing charge 19.27p per day
We've been offered the chance to renew on one of the following tariffs:

Next Flex (variable prices)
-- New monthly cost: £132.88
-- Electricity: Daily standing charge 44.75p; Unit rate 27.63p per kWh; Assumed annual usage 1,475kWh
-- Gas: Daily standing charge 27.22p; Unit rate 7.28p per kWh; Assumed annual usage 12,691kWh

Next Online v17 (fixed price)
-- New monthly cost:
£219.45
-- Electricity: Daily standing charge 44.75p; Unit rate 50.50p per kWh; Assumed annual usage 1,475kWh
-- Gas: Daily standing charge 27.22p; Unit rate 12.81p per kWh; Assumed annual usage 12,691kWh

Next 1 Year v17 (£297.96 per month; too expensive to consider)

Thank you.

Really up to you. Compared to your fix prices will be going up by 50% or over 100% (nearly tripling for gas) depending which of those options you choose
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

So if I go with the variable, the overall monthly cost will come close to the Next Online v17 monthly cost anyway?

Just edited my post as I realised it wasn't clear, I was referring to comparison with your current fix. Variable will based on price cap which hasn't yet been announced by likely to be somewhere near those numbers. They certainly won't be selling gas or electric at a bargain basement level below price cap.

Being as you use more gas (kWh) than electricity the gas rate of 12.81p will be cheaper than the estimated 14-16p expected on 1st October.

The electricity rate is on the high side at 50p but I suspect from the predictions from Cornwall insights it could be that level come Jan 2023 and not likely to reduce.....

This is all finger in the air stuff but I EON next normally don't have an exit fee and it would probably be worth fixing on that basis given that the price cap announcement is just over 3 weeks away.

As it is the summer months you shouldn't be using much energy so I would fix and back out depending on the Ofgem announcement later this month.

Make sure there are no exit fees.
