Payment protection

Hi
We are going away shortly. We rent a property privately and are due to make the final payment in the next couple of days ( no formal contract in place)
We have checked, and the owner does not accept Barclaycard  for payment
We are flying EasyJet and we are obviously concerned about the possibility of our flight being cancelled and not making our holiday at all.
Is there a way of making payment and it being protected should EasyJet mess us around?
I have checked with a few travel insurers and they would not cover this ( Flight issues would have to be dealt with via the airline directly)
Would Paypal cover this maybe?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you !

A credit card would not help in the scenario you describe,  it’s insurance you need.
  • Thanks but travel insurance won't cover this as in this scenario it would be the airlines fault ( The accommodation owner would have already been paid in full and reserved the apartment for us. He would probably not be able to fill the apartment at such short notice, so we understand he won't refund us the money in this instance) .... All hypothetical at the moment, but just trying to cover all bases!

The fact that the flight cancellation would be the airline's fault doesn't mean that cancellation insurance wouldn't pay out for consequential losses, so you need to find an insurer that covers that - there is no possibility of cover from a payment provider unless the supplier was in breach of contract, which wouldn't be the case in this scenario.

Looking at this from a different perspective, what are the prospects of finding alternative flights if the ones you've booked were cancelled?  Under the UK/EU 261 regulations EasyJet are legally on the hook for getting you there (and/or back) at no extra cost if they cancel your flights, but how viable that would be depends to a certain extent on the route you're flying....

You can’t “protect” your payment for your accommodation in the way that you describe. The payment  is for the accommodation only . The accommodation will be made available for your use . Therefore the payment is rightfully due to the owner regardless of whether you are able to travel there or not .

Under EU 261 regs If an airline cancels your flight ( for whatever reason ) you are entitled to chose to be re-routed on an alternative flight to your destination. This doesn’t have to be with the original airline if not available.

I would suggest researching alternative flights that could get you to your destination if the Easyjet flight is cancelled . In the eventuality that Easyjet cancels your flight you should not accept a refund but instead request that Easyjet book you on to the alternative flight ( that you are entitled to under EU 261 regs )If due to short notice , Easyjet are not able to fulfill this request you may have to book the alternative flights yourself and claim the money back from Easyjet retrospectively.

Only a few insurers will cover the consequential losses of a cancelled flight and the majority of those that do ; require that you claim from the airline in the first instance.
