Front Door Frame .. acceptable gap?

Just had a new front door frame fitted and the replacement frame is ~1" narrower (based on new door width).
I suspect that the fitted measured including the render which was partially covering the frame, thus the gap.
What should be an acceptable gap between the wall and frame, and should this be filled with something, or left as an air gap.

For a uPVC frame 5-10mm is an acceptable gap in my opinion. The frame should be secured firmly to the walls either side and shimmed so that the gap is even both sides and also square. The gap is then filled with expanding foam - The foam should never be relied upon as the primary or sole fixing (some fitters think it is OK - They should be taken outside and given a stiff talking to).If the gap is larger than 5-10mm, the extra can be taken up with filler strips - A poor substitute for sloppy measuring though. That said, if you have a thick layer of render around the door reveal, without chipping it back, a full sized frame would be very difficult to fit. The alternative would be to make a mess of the wall finish internally.. This should all have been discussed with you when measuring up.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Thanks for the quick reply.
If it makes any difference, this is a wooden frame for a wooden door?0 -

You shouldn't have an air gap. They normally run a bead round the frame.0
