Which Mattress

We need a new mattress on a wooden slatted double bed in the spare bedroom
The bed is hardly ever used - but we want a decent quality firmish mattress
I have seen all the ads on TV for hybrid ones - but are they any good - they cost quite a lot
but Simba (for example) appear to vary in price considerably (4'6" - £500)
We prefer to buy locally - in order to dispose of the existing one (they generally take the old one away for £10)
Any advice ?

I'd recommend getting an Ikea pocket sprung mattress, they are always well reviewed (especially by Which) and quite reasonable priced. Also, you should be able to get your local council to remove an old mattress for a small fee under their bulk waste collection service.

Is there any advantage to having springs as well as foam ?
ie) Emma original (£379) vs Emma Premium (£545)

A sprung mattress as likely to be firmer and last longer. I find foam mattresses too soft and warm for my taste. We've had Ikea Hovag firm mattresses and they have lasted 10 years of constant use, but they have now been discontinued. It looks like Valevag has replaced it on the Ikea website. £265 plus delivery for a standard double.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

I didn't notice that. I wonder what, if any other than a name change, the difference is.

I have a Simba (two actually as we put the original one on the guest bed and upgraded ours to the pro version). It’s the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever had (both versions), but all companies offer really long trial periods.

I’ve also had the original Emma (which was fine) and tried the Eve but had to send that back as found it too hard.

The biggest problem is in disposing of the existing sprung mattress
It won't roll up and council charge £61 for up to 3 items collection

I've had the original Emma, slept a lot on a Simba (close friends house) and now have a John Lewis pocket sprung.

The Emma was great for a time, until it just... wasn't. I feel like I got used to it and found it acceptable and then when we went back to pocket sprung after 8 years of various foam ones I realised how terrible they are. The pocket sprung is a dream in comparison and I would never go back to a Bed in a Box type one now.

The Simba at my friend's house is the premium one but it always gives me the worst bad back ever. Of course it's entirely subjective, I prefer a medium mattress as I lie on my back and have a big bum that needs to sink in somewhere! But my vote is pocket sprung.

My daughter chose an OTTY, which has a cool gel top.  It's very comfortable, but because of the gel, you cannot use an electric blanket.
