E.ON Next Smart Meter Monitor

E.ON Next have told us that we will need to pay for a Smart Meter In Home Display (IHD) - is this correct?

We have a really old SMETS1 Smart Meter that we inherited with our house, the IHD has never worked. I was finally able to book an appointment in December with E.ON but unfortunately there was an emergency on the day and the appointment was cancelled by E.ON and couldn't rearrange due to being transferred to E.ON Next.

The transfer took 5 months, I've now asked for a IHD and E.ON Next told me that it's not something they offer and I need to buy one. Is this correct? Ofgem say the maintenance of the smart meter and monitor is the provider's responsibility.

I've got emails from E.ON Directors office (after a complaint) saying that E.ON Next would contact me to arrange an appointment to install an IHD once transferred. Is this something that I should follow up to get them to install it or is there no chance?

Another thing, does anyone know if direct debits can be lowered completely so I can put the money in a bank account to earn interest on? I'm so fed up of them keeping my money, we're paying £150 a month and £320 in credit after our bill yesterday. I'd rather pay a minimal DD, and keep the money to pay the bills in a regular saver account and earn interest.

Yes, E.ON have no obligation to provide a new IHD to replace the one that originally came with your house.
You can also purchase one from a 3rd party like Hildebrand, who are authorised to properly add a new IHD to your comms hub and meter, but do not just try and buy one off eBay, it will not work without being whitelisted by your supplier, and few if any of them are willing to do that for an IHD of unknown origin.
For your other question, look at changing to a variable DD, that will take the full value of the bill each time instead of the level DD as you have now. ... just keep in mind that the bills get large in winter...

I pay Eon Next on variable DD so my current balance after the last bill is £0.  However I am anticipating large bills in Winter so have been putting money into premium bonds this year (on the off chance) and have now saved enough to offset the extra I need to pay over the next year compared to what I've paid in this last year.

IHD's have a specific code called a GUID.  In the past I've managed to talk to the utility firm (in this case EDF) and they were able to change the setup in order to connect it to the current smart meter.  Now this was SMETS2 but as I've read they are now possible to connect / are upgrading SMETS1 units so I'd suggest it might be possible to use your existing equipemtn.  They just ned to change the GUID code they have at their end to the one you have on your IHD.  Good Luck!

The OP does not own an IHD, so nothing there to connect.

Thanks so much! I will have a look for our old smart meter, although when I tried it I had it plugged in for a few days and it didn't work. I've seen Ivie Bud IHDs on Amazon are they authorised?

I will also change to a variable DD, I didn't know that was possible  :)
