I don't agree with your first sentence, but thank you for the link to OS Maps, of which I was not aware.  Problem is I don't want to pay for maps, so it looks like I'm stuck with all the crap on Google's 

The "crap" is the bit that pays for the expensive service you don't want to pay for...

Shame that all the adverts on Google maps help pay for the free services, if only there was a way to get everything Google does for free without adverts!

There’s a price for everything. Apple Maps is much less bloated but apple obviously make more money from hard ware than google do. 

Tom tom app is very good but you have to pay for that. 

The flip side is of course that google maps is the goto app when you want to find a business.
