Temporary car insurance advice

Options
Hi,
I contacted my car insurance company because I wanted to add my brother as a temporary driver, he lives in Austria and comes home 3 months of the year they said they can't offer temporary insurance. So I contacted a insurance company that offers daily insurance I've not bought it yet as  my mum seems to think one car cant have two insurance policies on it. Is this correct? Obviously one policy is my yearly one and the temporary one would be up to 20 days per trip home. Would I need to tell my insurance company about the daily insurance? I'm so confused, please help!

Can you add him as second driver without anything about it being for only certain occasions?  Or change your policy so anyone can drive your car?

If you have 2 policies it can be a hassle if there is a claim.  It would be split 50/50 and you would incur 2 deductible charges.

No, unfortunately not as he has a EU driving license so my own insure won't cover him.

The daily insurance for your brother I would imagine works like learners insurance in that it covers the named person (your brother) to drive any car (subject to certain limits) rather than specifically your car.  If he is in charge of your car his temporary insurance in in force, as your policy offers no cover for him when he is in charge of your car then there is no overlap in policy cover, avoiding the two insurance policy problem.
As always, read the terms carefully to make sure.

    No, it's an urban myth.

Having two insurance policies on a car can make the process of a claim a little more complicated if there's an event which could be covered by either policy, such as the car being stolen, or hit while parked. However it doesn't mean that the insurance is invalid or that the car is somehow uninsured - it means that potentially the two insurers pay half of the claim each. And most incidents will obviously only be covered by one policy anyway - as each policy only covers one person to drive.

This is precisely the story of situation for which temporary policies are designed. There is no need to tell your current insurer unless you actually have a claim.

Unlikely - most temporary policies of the type the OP is talking about cover a specific person to drive a specific car. They're just like a standard policy in most respects, except they run for a few days or weeks rather than a year.
