I appreciate that experience can often count for more than qualifications, although qualifications I suppose should be part of my IFA selection process and recommendation.

What should their minimum qualifications be, and ideally be?
Personally I think it's overkill to be reviewing qualifications, but the MSE article about picking an IFA does include it as one of the 'four questions you should ask', including their view about what the best answers should be:

Realistically, the default qualifications cover around 99% of advice needs.  So, you shouldn't need more unless you are getting into really niche areas.   I say that as someone who has higher than default qualifications.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.
