    I prodded it gently with a blade of grass and it turned and sneered at me !

    If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

    It has no ability to hurt you. The only ones that might are the very hairy sort; the hairs might cause skin irritation or be inhaled and cause dizzines/breathing problems.
    Sneering isn't catching, but of course it's there on the spectrum of hate crime so keep your distance, just in case.

    Caterpillars do scream.
    I've heard them.in the past 
    It's extremely unnerving

    They are almost as big as M&S's Colin!!

    I can remember finding one as a kid. Mum let me keep it in a big jar (she ran a sweet shop at the time) and I gave him fresh privet every day until he made his cocoon. We kept the jar in the shed over winter. In spring we took the lid off the jar and lay it on it's side under the hedge and one morning he had hatched and gone.
