Japan/Tokyo/Kyoto.. Packages and Independent travel

Hi,
Has anybody recently been to Japan since restriction changes?
How did you find it and was it very restrictive moving around freely?
We, as a family, are hoping to plan a holiday for next Spring although currently it seems this can only be done through an approved operator and appears to be very restrictive and more costly.
I would hope to plan ours independently once the Japanese government ease these Operator restrictions but it does seem like a waiting game.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

I’m not able to answer your question directly as it’s been a good 10 years since I went but if you haven’t already you should look at a JR Pass.0

At the moment you can only go as part of a tour group. No freedom, you stay with them at all times.
Eventually things will go back to normal. If expect that will be well before spring. Of course nobody can know for sure.0
