Car tax for new vehicle

Hi

I am getting new second-hand car next week and I need to tax it.

I do not have any DVLA documentation relating to this new vehicle.

Vehicle is being collected on Tue 2 Aug, and I do have the registration number of the vehicle, so how do I tax it in order to drive it home?

Many thanks

If the vehicle isn't registered to you and you don't have a V5C/2 I don't think you can tax it - you'll need to SORN it while you apply for a log book, and move it on a trailer or trade plates.
I don't think even the dealer you're purchasing it from can tax it on your behalf without a V5C/2.

Edit: If you mean you don't have any DVLA documentation now, but will be getting it when you collect the car then you can just tax the car as soon as you receive the V5C/2 from the seller

If you are buying from a dealer the change of registered keeper and purchase of VED should all be done online as part of the purchase and handover process.

That's how it has been done at different dealers I have used for the last 4-5 car purchases.

You need to clarify if there is a V5 for the vehicle.
If there is you tax it when you pick it up and before you drive it.  Can be done on line https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax A dealer would normally do it and just bill it to you.
If there is no V5 you cannot tax or drive it until you get one which can take several weeks.

    Hi

I phoned the dealer and he confirms what you both say.

    Many thanks.
