The cost of being disconnected from the grid then reconnected will most likely be more than the standing charges you'll save.
  • Hi,

You can't "cancel". If you have a meter/supply you pay standing charge. To avoid you'd have to have meter/supply removed costing hundreds (or maybe thousands). For winter you'd have to have meter and supply refitted again costing hundreds (more likely thousands).

    Sorry.
  • Cancelling may not be a problem.

Getting a company to put in a new meter and offer you a contract may be an issue.

There was a small new build estate featured on my local news and no company will fit meters until 2023 !

What help would it be to cancel gas for 6 months, saving about £50 in standing charges, if you have to much more to get you meter disconnected and reconnected again. EDF charges £80 for their part of the disconnection already, and that does not include the DNO cost.

Also how do you plan to heat water, immersion heater will be 3 to 4 times more expensive. What you save in standing charge for gas most will have to pay more  in electricity.

Standing charges are avoidable by relying entirely on self-generation.

If you are able to finance a reliable self-generation over the whole year I doubt that standing charges would bother you.

You may find a company that will cap a gas supply for free (they used to anyway) but getting the meter refitted will be a major problem. You are dealing with companies and regulators who treat customers with total contempt whenever they can get away with it. It is likely that cost of gas and electricity will equalize going forward (if for no other reason than the government wants to cancel gas). If you consider all the costs of running a gas boiler it may already be cheaper to heat one room with electric than a whole house on gas. I am the same, I turn off the gas for eight months a year at the meter (maybe ten months this time round!) and just use a halogen heater occasionally but my boiler is only three years old and am trying to sell the house so no radical plans at the moment. Possibly, if you split your gas and electric between two companies and refuse to pay the gas bill they will come and cap the supply!

If the govn woke up they would give incentives for people to cap their gas supply and help save the planet.
