Car insurance - NCB policyholder or main driver??

Hi, my husband and I are separating. We have a car each and I am the registered keeper of both cars. I am the policyholder for both car insurances (separate not multicar), but he is the main driver for his car. My question - is the 13 years NCB on his car for him as the main driver or is it for me as the policyholder? I want to make him the registered keeper of the car, and to have him as the policyholder on the insurance, but without the NCB the cost will be very high!

As long as he has a clean record then NCD doesn't represent the level of discount that it used to... was always a bit of a farce with over 80% of people having almost maximum NCD anyway.

In most cases it will be the policyholder who owns the NCD but have heard of insurers that say its the Main Driver... if he was to buy his policy with the same insurer that you are currently with they may be more willing to allow him to use the NCD in the circumstances.

What does the document actually say on it for his car. You may well be the registered keeper but that is different.

Whose name is actually on the policy? Usually you have the main driver (who would be the policy holder) and named drivers (which would be you) and you can have a different registered keeper who for the purposes of driving is not covered unless also a named driver.

I guess you could also have an administrator, but not sure how that would work.

This what Aviva say for example https://www.aviva.co.uk/faq/answer/motor/3080/

Do I need to be the policyholder to be the main driver?

The main driver (or vehicle policyholder) is the person who drives the vehicle most often and earns no claims discount.

They do not need to be the principle policyholder but they must live at the same address as them.

What the current insurer says is only half the problem... the norm/default is that the policyholder is the main driver, in fact asking who the main driver is is a relatively new capability on websites, and so whilst Aviva may say under its policies that the Main Driver rather than the Policyholder is who earns the NCD doesn't mean Admiral accepts that when they receive the proof of NCD showing Mrs X was the policyholder and its 5 years NCD even if it shows Mr X as the main driver.

Thank you. I am the owner of the car on the log book, and also the policyholder for the car insurance. He is down as the main driver and I am down as a named driver.

I think I might need to get in touch with the current insurer and see if they will change the policy to be in his name and honour the NCD.

Thank you. Think I will get in touch with the current insurer and see what they can do.
