gas & electric meter
I have recently phoned my energy supplier (British gas) to ask if I would be able to have my own gas and electric meters fitted to save on the standing charge.
I understand by law you have right to buy and fit your own meters as long as you have the permission of the energy supplier and have a qualified person to do so.
After making several calls all with mixed messages two people saying yes and three saying no, I am still very much in the dark.
Is this a taboo subject? and who would I need to contact for a definitive answer?
many thanks

It's not a taboo, it's absolute cobblers. The standing charge is not for the meter, it's for supplying the energy to your property.1

Let me guess, you got this information from Facebook or Instagram?
The standing charge is not a fee to cover the cost of your meter, there are many different costs that are covered by the standing charge.
Lets start with the biggest increase, the cost of SOLR for the customers that were with the suppliers that went bust. Why do you think you should no longer pay your share for this cost just because you have a meter that is owned by you?
Worst case scenario they might let you have a own meter, you would pay for it, pay for changing to the meters and maintenance, and you would still pay the standing charge.1 -
No, you cannot avoid the standing charge by fitting your own meters despite what you may read elsewhere on the internet. The standing charge is not just to cover the cost of the meter, you have been misinformed.0
